About the Course Evaluation Means

Timing

The means for a given academic year, starting with the 2002-03 year, will be published and distributed in the following January to coincide with the return of Autumn Quarter evaluations (e.g., the 2002-03 means are distributed with the Autumn 2003-04 evaluations).

Population

Summer is excluded as the percentage of regular Stanford faculty who teach during that quarter is low.

The published divisional means for H&S correspond with the groupings of departments as described in the Stanford Bulletin. After consultation with the H&S Dean’s Office, interdepartmental programs have been assigned to divisions as follows:

  • Humanities: American Studies; Dance; Ethics in Society; Feminist Studies; History and Philosophy of Science and Technology; Jewish Studies; Medieval Studies; Modern Thought and Literature
  • Natural Sciences: Biophysics; Human Biology
  • Social Sciences: African and African American Studies; African Studies; Archaeology; Comparative Studies in Race and Ethnicity and its subprograms; East Asian Studies; International Policy Studies; International Relations; Latin American Studies; Public Policy; Russian, East European and Eurasian Studies; Science, Technology, and Society; Symbolic Systems; Urban Studies

Methodology

The means have been broken out by division, as well as by class size and whether the course is introductory or not (as determined by catalog numbers less than 100). Means by individual subject code have been distributed to department chairs and program directors. We recognize that the publication of these means is a work-in-progress.
